There is no cure for HPV infection. Because the infection usually resolves (goes away) on its own, it normally does not require treatment unless a related condition, such as genital warts, develops.

In some cases, warts are removed surgically (called excision) or by freezing them with liquid nitrogen (called cryotherapy); however, wart removal does not cure HPV infection. The virus lies dormant in skin cells and abnormal skin growths and cell changes may recur until the body's immune system is able to destroy the virus. Removing warts may help reduce the risk for HPV transmission.
